My early morning coffee enjoyed while setting in my porch swing was annoyingly difficult while being attacked by birds. Yikes! Realizing they were swallows alarmed me. This could mean only one thing. the beginning of their nest building.
Not only above the swing but on one of the sunshades also.
Yikes and so messy! As my cup of coffee grew cold I dragged the high pressure garden hose to the porch and spent 45 minutes washing down and cleaning the mess up. While at it I sprayed and cleaned the deck furniture which needed to be done anyway.
All done with that little chore and methinks I need to put a cat in a patio chair for her nap today, that will keep the swallows away at least for today.

Very hot and humid here in Iowa today and we have for the 1st time this season turned on the a/c. We usually wait until our misery level is at 100% before we turn it on. But this year we gave in faster than usual. since I am expecting guests later today and want them to be comfortable.
Have a good day and stay cool if you can!

not the attack of the swallows!! oh woah ... do drag out the cat ... do you have a lot of swallows? would they go for a purple martin house? i hope you had more hot coffee to enjoy after your side trip of the wash down!! I'd be a crank all day w/o java!! speaking of a/c ... i remember we used to turn on the a/c only on Sundays (I think we had fans) ... and wonder if we were just more tolerable of the heat then ... cauz I'd hate to do w/o it now!! Hope you have a good visit!!
It is hot and humid here too. bleh....lol
I've had to fight the swallows before. They loved the porch on one house I lived in. They aren't bad here. Here I have to deal with wrens. They love to nest in the flower pots on the porch.
@C_L_O_G - We also have wrens and they are small but mighty! Back when I used a clothes line it was not unusual for wrens to start nests in clothing on theline!
@Lucy_or_Ethel - It amazes me how quickly they will start a nest in something that comes and goes in their world. I discovered one of their nests in the spare tire mounted on the back of the jeep.
@C_L_O_G - LOL I think I read some place that the male wren builds several nests and then lets his bride decide on which one she wants. Not a wise idea to let the female have that must power LOL
Good luck with the Swallows. They are VERY persistent. Over 90 here already. I have a day's work done since I started watering about 6:15a.m., laundry, remake the bed, pick blackberries, shower, bake cakes for a Christian School fund raiser, Amish here cleaning too. Wil hauling in hay bales.
I keep the swallow nests knocked down on the house too. There's enough old barns and sheds in the area for that. And they're SO messy!!!
@TheSunnyC - You put me to shamr! You accomplish more in a morning than I do in 3 days! It is nice to get things done, hard to beat a good feeling of accomplishment.
@GrannyHummingbird - I agree 100% with you and the swallows. So messy!
Cleaning up bird messes and then enjoying company...sounds like a pretty good day! (except for the heat).
They are nesting here too and the trees along the river banks are full of nests. It is cool and overcast here.
@Lucy_or_Ethel - lol You gotta remember I have my house cleaned. I'm gone most of the morning 3 days a week and then of course there is Sunday when not much but church and right now Bible Study is done. I have to do it when I'm home and before it gets too hot so Tues/Thurs/Sat is about it.
@TheSunnyC - Having that schedule is a good motivator isn't it?
I love your porch swing!

Enjoy your company!
Tis warm here (in the low 90's today) but with no humidity!
HUGS! and Have a safe, fun, Happy 4th weekend!
They seem to pick the most inconvenient spots! Hope they stay away - but persistance is one of their traits.
