  • Do Not Delay.........I'm A Slow Learner

Years ago my brother-in-law captured this shot of the windmill on the family farm that had recently sold to new owners.

Unknown to him at the time this lovely old windmill was scheduled to be  bulldozed down the next day. I am a slow learner this should have taught me not to delay getting that shot when something catches my eye.
Along a route I often travel stood an old barn, showing signs of the ravages of the years but remained picturesque and in a pretty setting. . Each time I passed I thought I should stop and get a picture of that old barn. The other day I found  this new sign on a new closed gate

and the barn had partially fallen with the wind and I would be trespassing now if I got any closer. This is certainly not the shot I had wanted to take of the old barn, I had to zoom to get this.

This timing amazes me.Remember this shot several weeks ago?

Today it is a pile of ashes.

With that in mind I grabbed my camera and approached this wonderful old round barn. One of very few round barns still standing.

I had been wanting to capture a shot of this for a long time and am certainly glad I learned my lesson not to delay.
Kind of a lesson in life as much as in photography actually. I guess my motto can be "if not now when?" no matter if it applies to fixing broken  relationships or visiting sick friends or sending out that card or whatever,"if not now when?"

Are you staying cool today?  It is 75 here at the moment and we have had an early morning sprinkle, just enough to make it like a sauna as it warms back up.

  • It is sad to see this old barn collapsed . By the round one still has great look ! Do not delay , you are right.

    Love

    Michel

  • I like the thought of doing today what you want to do because the opportunity may be gone next time. I love those old barns too. We have a really old barn too but it was built like a fortress. I really like the looks of it as old but we're slowly siding it as we have money or not! Sometimes when you start with fixing the foundation it's a never ending task! I'm a little sad at the 'new' siding look. I love the old weathered barn look but I don't want it to fall down either. They don't build them like they used to.

It is hot and steamy here too. I'm thinking of watching a fair parade but don't know yet. Have a great Sunday!

  • Such a good lesson to us all! Never put off til tomorrow, what is on our heart today.

Oh that round barn, how I would love to see someone restore it, it's lovely. So rustic and full of stories.

  • What a great post with such a great lesson.  I would love to turn that old round barn into a house.  Maybe a bread and breakfast. I have always wanted to do a bread and breakfast.  That is one dream I have let slip away.

  • Beautiful picture, and so lucky to get it!

  • Lovely photos of an almost bygone era.  I'm glad you were able to shoot these barns before they disappeared completely!

  • I love that round barn!! don't see too many of those ... and yes, today is the right time ... for everything! we will probly be hawt again today ... no sprinkles in sight ...

  • I procastinate - terrible habit, I know.  I'm going to try and use your motto more often.  I love love love your photos and message, very good job!  Peace

  • A perfect reminder to "Carpe Diem" I love the round barn. We  have some around here that are still in use but not many...

  • Such beautiful pics Nancy...I always enjoy your blogs!

  • Beautiful pictures...hope you are enjoying this lovely weekend.  It is about 81degrees here and very comfortable.

  • This reads like the story of my life of the past 10 or so years. My motto became, "A day late, and a dollar short". I despair over missed opportunities... a spoken word that needed to be said but for one reason or another did not get said, and later realizing those words might have made a difference had they been spoken at the time God prodded me to speak them. And things that didn't get done that now the opportunity has passed for ever doing them.
Yes, "A day late, and a dollar short" is my lament.

As far as staying cool... Yes, in my air conditioning... staying indoors. It is a steambath outside here too.

  • @JstNotherDay - Thanks for the comment. Sometimes we get a 2nd chance though don't we? Not always but sometimes!

  • I know what you mean there is an old golf course sign and I keep asking hubby to pull over but then I never have time to pull over when he's not ith me either.

  • To @murisopsis too------ - When I went to see SewWorthIt, in Oklahoma, they took me to a restored round barn.  Can't remember the name of the town.   We went inside, and they had pictures of other round barns, and their locations, from all over the U.S.   If you have pictures of some they don't have, I'm SURE they'd like to have a photo and the location.   Now I gotta go e-mail SewWorthIt, and tell her to come here and look at THIS one.   Wonder if they have a picture of THIS one,  in 'HER' round barn.

  • So true and when I think about taking photos of a certain place I go do it because a lot of times it will not be there in a few years. Great shots.

  • @Babyboomerjill - I have only myself to blame but I like to try to blame Fritz whenever I can.@GrannyHummingbird - I will share any info about this barn that I have, I took many pictures but none of the interior.@Tymedancer_is_Grannyinboxers - Thank you for your comment and yes I am learning to keep my camera with me also.

  • Like the pictures and yes, move it or lose it is the usual thing. I try to move to get what I want saved for posterity but often lose it by running too slowly.

  • @TheSunnyC - At least you are trying! Have a good day today. Here it is not to get into the 90's today for a brief break.

  • yes, I'm going to have to get that sign of the little golf course soon cause the place is for sale now. I got a photo one time from the road when Dave was driving 55miles an hour but it didn't turn out too well. I hope I get it but you actually have to get off the highway and it's such a chore.

  • You are so right. What could be a perfect picture, can disappear overnight. The pictures you have posted, are beautiful.

  • Your photos and words are just what I needed today! Thank you!
You are capturing some important things/places that will not be around forever. And the life lessons you share from your photos are so helpful to me!
    HUGS!
    ps...cool and rainy here today.

  • @AdamsWomanFell - I would gladly trade weather with you! thank you for your sweet comment.
@ZSA_MD - Thank you for your comment.

  • @murisopsis - @GrannyHummingbird - @Lucy_or_Ethel -  The lovely round barn that @Grannyhummingbird mentioned is in Arcadia, Okla. They have a book with pictures of round barns and their location . , I will try to get an address for you or I would guess that you could google it using the name of the town.   They have a shop inside with lots of interesting items, and they rent out the loft for weddings , and other things.  Restoring it was a 'good thing' for the community!

  • @SewWorthIt - thanks for the info I shall try to locate it online!
