Living in the animal kingdom!
What is this?
Fritz and Lucy started out for their walk and spied this creature near the road.
A box turtle. How beautiful his hidden design and coloring is.
_________
After leaving the turtle Fritz wanted to check the gauge on the propane tank and lifted the protective lid. Yikes!
Having my camera handy I managed to capture a shot or 2 of the little toads hiding there. They scattered and hopped and jumped so quickly the camera and frightened photographer only captured a few at a time but all together there were maybe 10 or 15 of these little things under the dome. Evidently the cool propane tank was a haven of rest on that very hot afternoon for the little fellows.
Life is interesting here at the jolly little cottage.

The turtle does have a beautiful under shell. It almost looks like a tatoo.
My goodness, toad invasion. lol I think it is neat your found them and got a couple of pictures to share.
Love the box turtle too.
Cute little toads. I guessed that was a turtle. We've had more than the usual number of them in our yard this year. I think the nest we marked in the front yard is due to hatch in a week or so. My daughter marked the due date on her calendar and we will be watching and hope we get to see some itty bitty turtles.
Hah! I'm glad you weren't the one to open the lid on that tank! I have a little thing for turtles so I surely enjoyed the photos of this beautiful fella. Peace
@cerwindoris - @C_L_O_G - @shellisland - It made our walk interesting to say the least. Thank you for your comments.
@ata_grandma - Please keep me updated on your turtle nest. How many babies do you anticipate? I hope you can get a picture or 2. What fun!
@ata_grandma - I've never seen itty bitty box turtles.
Lol, about your reaction to the toads. I think my granddaughters would have been trying to catch them, all except one who is not thrilled with them. We had a tire laying out and somehow a snapping turtle got into it and couldn't get back out. They are mad at everything!
I wonder if that is a painted turtle and what time of year they lay eggs? Enjoyed the pictures.
@mcbery - Thanks for your comment. I wonder if when the little box turtles hatch if they also will have the beuatiful sdesigns. Also need to do some research and see if the designs are identical on each turtle or maybe like fingerprints and be different on each one? Inquiring minds want to know. The snapping turtle was nothing to mess with was it? they come by their name naturally don't they?
Yes, they do come by their name naturally. You should have seen my little grandson's eyes. He ran away to look at it!
I can tell, there's been one of those little guys on my kitchen window, even though I didn't see him. I think they're so cute, coming to the window, because the light, inside, draws night-time bugs. BUT!!! Then they pee on the window, and it runs all the way to the bottom. Gotta get out there and wash those 3 windows today. I cleaned them on the inside, yesterday. Thankfully, it's cooled off here, quite a bit.
@GrannyHummingbird - Cooler here also and a great relief! I also will wash a window or 2 today. Fritz is having the grandsons here this evening for cardboard pizza, not that the boys will notice sparkling clean windows LOL but that the windows need it.
Lovely little creatures! I had a baby packrat in my garage yesterday which means I have a nest somewhere. Not innocent lovely little creatures, in my case.
@Dominie - Oh nooo, thought you were done with those pests!
I see a quilt design on that turtles shell! It's fun seeing life through a camera lens. Thanks for sharing.
@PollythePatchworker - Seeing things through the eyes of a quilter is a good thing. I can see floor coverings from the 1970's in that turtle's design. LOL Thanks for the comment.
hubby used to find all kinds of stuff in the phone wire boxes and when we had a pool back in the early 90's there was always things in the filter too.
we live next to the country and if we don't get rain we'll be seeing all kinds of stuff.
@Babyboomerjill - We are so thankful we've received rain recently and crops look nice and lawns are green,
You can never know when the camera can come handly, specially when you spot little critters.
@Mal_P - Indeed one never knows when a Kodak moment will present it's self! Thank for your comment.
These creatures are so precious and beautiful! Thank you for sharing them with us!
I love the little toads! I haven't seen any this summer...just the big ole bullfrogs!
HUGS!
@Babyboomerjill - I read this comment with interest. I had a cousin come over from Indiana, and wanted to know if I wanted to go Geocashing with her. I'D NEVER HEARD OF IT!!! We went, and one of the clues was Ma Bell. Turns out it was hidden in one of those little round phone boxes with many trinkets in the container it held. I've often wondered what the telephone repair man thinks when he opens it. Wonder if he knows it's a Geocashing game. (o;
@AdamsWomanFell - @GrannyHummingbird - Thanks for the comments.
Wow @ the box turtle.
What a pretty natural design on that box turtle. Your toad cup is running over. Those little hoppers want to live with you.
@Grannys_Place - LOL They are cute outside where they belong. Once I brought a hanging basket into the house before a storm. As it sat on the floor it was not long before I had 2 little hoppers on the floor beside the basket. It was not easy catching them, touching them and getting them outside LOL.
It was nice to 'see' you again over at my place.
Sometime it would be fun for all the people our age on line to meet somewhere. No young silly skulls full of mush allowed. Lol! Just kidding. Have a great day.
What a scary little surprise!
The designs and colors in nature seem endless. Great shots!
@mcbery - LOL Yes that would be fun, like minded people and no opposing views allowed LOL
@ItsWhatEyeKnow - Thanks for oyur commetn, yes scary indeed! I also marvel at the beauty of this turtle that is not normally seen.
@GrannyHummingbird - lol he's never mentioned that. He's been retired for 6yrs now-I'll have to ask him.
Great photos of the beautiful colors on the turtle.
Hidden beauty on a turtle. Never thought of that. My wife always shows me her cacti plants when they bloom. I am so amazed at the very ugly, prickly plants that can produce such a large beautiful flower. It is always a reminder that humans have beauty in them that is not always seen.

I sat outside in the dark with my husband last night looking at the stars. A toad hopped across my path and nearly scared the heebie jeebies out of me. I'm just glad I didn't scream! The whole neighborhood would have come running...how embarrased I'd have been. Have a great weekend.
@MadraysGarden - You folks have a nice weekend also my friend.
the toads have the most beautiful irises in the world , Jean Rostans said ( golden iris))
My sons would love those.
@Randy7777 - Boys and frogs!
Thank you for the blessing this morning! It's nice to start my day with a blessing from a friend!
Hope your day is wonderful too.
@mcbery - Thank you my friend!
