The reason to proceed with caution
For years I have seen this building, a church called Elk Chapel. 25 or 30 years ago I attended a fund raiser here to garner funds for restoration of this old building with so much history of our county. Evidently the funds raised were not enough to sustain the well being of this once popular church and meeting place.
It sits along a major highway, the outhouse stands to the right.

I was impressed to see this, although rather spooky to see what first appeared to be fresh flowers on the door knob

Closer view showed them to be silk, hmm? Curious.

I grew braver since this is a well traveled road and the grass was not so overgrown not to reveal any old wells etc.

I held my camera through an open window and captured these shots.

The old piano still stands proudly

But believe me there remains a real and present danger in browsing around vacant buildings

See them?

Bees and lot's of them!!! Yikes. I had wondered what that noise was. At 1st I thought maybe my mind was playing tricks on me and I was hearing the long ago choir singing an old hymn I didn't recognize.

Needless to say I left the area with gladness that I had not entered the old building. It is easier to high tail it to my vehicle rather than try to hurriedly exit the building and run to the vehicle.

OMGosh! A booBEE trap!!
OH my! RUN~
I love the shot #10, can't believe you got that through a window! The door shot is really sweet rustic~
@WildWomanOfTheWest - The window glass was broken and all I could do was reach in with my camera and not actually see what I was shooting until I reviewed them. Some of those windows were higher up than I could have climbed into if I had wanted to so I stretched up and stuck the camera through the empty window frame not knowing exactly what I could get. I also like #10. Glad you enjoyed the tour of Elk Chapel.
@Lucy_or_Ethel - That really is amazing! You captured some really nice shots, even if you couldn't see what you were framing!
Wow! Amazing photos! I love the ones of the sign, the door, the window, and the bees! GREAT shots! It is sad that this building was never restored. But, I guess the bees made a home of it. Maybe they were humming "Bee Still My Soul". ???
HUGS!
@LoBornlytesThoughtPalace - Indeed a booBEE trap! LOL
@AdamsWomanFell - LOL yes..that must have been what they were humming LOL
What a shame that it has not been kept up!-- No shortage of bees in your part of the country. Good that you saw them in time to not disturb them.-- Love all the shots of the inside!!!
Thank goodness you didn't get any bees attack! The photos are awesome.
If a church like that would of been in my city. In about 30 days the piano would been gone and the furniture too.
what a neat ol' place ... good photos ma'am ... my favorite is #10!! bees would have me shagging butt back to the car!! Twice I've met skunks ... one time she chased me!! jeepers!!
Wow. The bees were certainly the church going kind! hehe! Glad you didn't get stung. Great interior/exterior shots!
Great pictures! In Tucson those bees would have been Africanized and after you in a second.
Great fun I so like looking in on old buildings.
Blessings
What a good blog. Glad you escaped the bees but did enjoy your visit.
I'm glad you didn't get stung. Did you notice the word Brethren was spelled wrong on the sign? A lot of people spell it wrong. Brethern and sistern......hehe.
Wow, what great pictures. Even the fan got left behind in the old church. I wonder what happened that it still stand like that, empty and forsaken, with the old things still in it? Could they all have left at once and no one was left to get the things? It would be fun to weave a story around it.
Have a great day and thanks for stopping by.
@mcbery - Thank you for your comment. Yes, it would be interesting to know the story of this abandonment. A shame it wasn't kept up but the money must not have been there.
oh,my! you got some good photos and those pews are great
@Babyboomerjill - It is good that this chapel is located right there on a well traveled highway with occupied houses near by or it would have been vandalized years ago. Those pews are neat aren't they!
@Lucy_or_Ethel - i've seen some painted barn red lately -pews that is-wait it was on seedsowers site and so pretty!
Great shots and happy you got away from that bee swarm telling you that you were shooting photos of their home. I asked my neighbor who is an elderly Shammon why the corn silk tied to the door and she said to honor the building.
I love these photos! thanks for sharing
Neat pics, in Dallas there is Old City Park, restored old buildings and there is a church that looks similar to this one
Thanks for your comments, always good to exchange ideas with others...Blessings to you...Mike
What a fascinating place and what lovely photos....how sad that it has fallen into disuse. Thanks for sharing...
@Abiding_Love - Thank you for the comment!
@Abiding_Love - Thanks for your comment!
There were risks to go in . But the glance you got shows a sad abandon .
In your previous post , you showed also an old church .
Those old churches are part of the history of America . Thanks for sharing this

I am sorry the "rec " system does not work for me !
@fauquet - Thank you for your comment and the sweet mini. The country church we attend is over 150 years old. It sits on a hill with a nice large yard and has been kept in excellent condition. There are very few country churches still used in this area of Iowa. Sometime soon I may post a picture of the church we attend. I hope you have a nice weekend Michel.
Gorgeous place. I'm amazed that it's still in such good shape inside.
@Roadkill_Spatula - The roof seems to be good and must account for the building still standing. With the siding full of bees and so many windows broken it won't be long until the weather ruins it inside. Thank you for your comment.
Thanks for your kind words! Glad you enjoy the "funnies"
Have a great weekend!
I love history of any sort and this was an eye opener..thanks Nancy
@andreas_d -

I am waiting for that .
Love
Michel
