Our washer broke down.....
Suddenly my washer quit. Fritz carefully looked it all over and diagnosed the problem. A check online for parts revealed it would be over $100 for the replacement part. Older washer by today's standard of 7 years (don't get me started on that issue as someone who remembers 25-30 year old appliances still perking away doing what they were designed to do). The decision was made to go the 140 mile round trip to Des Moines to get a new washer.
Easily accomplished purchase and a lovely afternoon to take a drive and admire the autumn trees in their height of color.
We pulled behind the store and the little pick up truck was quickly loaded with said washer filling the bed of the little Toyota.
and then......he saw this row of riding mowers.....
on sale no less.............
After nearly 50 years of loving this man I can often read his mind so I noted the decision making process rattling around in his mind as he looked to the loaded pick up, back to the greatly reduced in price riding mower and them back to the loaded bed of the pick up....then he looked at me....I said,"hey it's up to you, either way we 'll have to return for either this mower you'll use next week or the washer I'll use tonight, the decision is yours". He disappeared inside the store, paid for the mower and will pick it up today. I praised his good thinking and his appreciation of having a constant supply of clean clothing as we headed toward home with the washer.

lol Good choice he made.
wow ... a two-fer ... new washing machine and mower!! cool!! too bad you didn't have a bigger truck!!
plus it's way cool that yawl have been loving each other for 50 years ... way cool!
LOL!!
Men and their machines...just can't help themselves. I'd say he made the wiser choice but it's probably a good thing he had you along for the ride!
Haha! 140 miles for appliances! :-O
LOVED this story. I might have been tempted to send my adult children to the pond to do their own laundry, and picked the lawn mower up for myself. haha~
Enjoyed~
And now you're both happy?
Glad you were able to get both machines. I know what you mean about the greatly decreasing lifespan of washers and dryers! the second Maytag we ever bought was NOT the washer the first one had been.
Kathi
You were kind and he was wise - what a great team!!
The power of disguised persuasion in a simply stated statement !!!LOL It worked for you, and you both are winners !
HA! I loved reading this!
You two are certainly in sync!
Yes, I had a washer that was so old it rusted out finally! The repair man said, Don't count on a new one lasting as long as this old one did!
I told him, Thanks!
HUGS!
Yep, you have a smart guy there making a good choice. I hear you on appliances that use to last 25-30 yrs. Now I can really get on my soapbox about that.
Grr, I can't even tell you how much it annoys me that appliances now break after a few years!
Very wise, my dear, in how you handled the situation. LOL
Love is full of the nicest surprises sometimes!
What a sweet story....and you both get something you need and will use!
I agree, things don't last as long as they should. I just had to replace a new-ish fridge (everything about it was still awesome) except the compressor went. Cost too much to fix it; would not have been cost-effective. Bummer!
you manage things very well with your hubby. : )
@TheSunnyC - @windupherskirt - @angys_coco - @dingdongdingbat - Thank you for your comments!
@oxlorixo - @WildWomanOfTheWest - @ata_grandma - Thanks for your comments and yes we do manage to figure things out and be happy LOL.
@Still_groovy - @murisopsis - @SewWorthIt - Thanks for your comments.
@AdamsWomanFell - @thistlepatch - @TheMushyPear - Thanks for your comments!
@Dominie - We have our moments LOL.
@andreas_d - Nice surprises yes, thanks for your comment.
@musicmom60 - It is very disappointing to see how cheaply things are made anymore and how quickly they break down. Thanks for your comment.
@ofunlo - Thanks Fritz and I make quite the pair LOL but we have our moments !
We use to get used washing machines (free) and replaced them every 6 months. I got tired of that and went with a good one (expensive) and that's broke down a couple times already.
It's the right time of year to look for a mower, for sure! Hopefully we don't have to mow too much longer this year but then if it stays warm enough to mow, I won't complain. Now you can wash and mow to your hearts content.
Have a great rest of the week.
@Randy7777 - I would much rather have an older appliance than these new ones!! But anymore anyone who has the older ones keep them until the replacement parts are no longer available! I had a Maytag electric cooking stove that I got free for the taking. It had been manufactured in the 1950's. I got it in 1967. A beautiful solid cook stove. As time passed I got down to having only one of the 4 burners still working and parts no longer available in 1982. Sadly had to get rid of it although our son had found an old stove that had an oven element I needed in 1980 on Thanksgiving day while I had an oven full of turkey and pies LOL. It pays to know where a junk ditch is hidden away! LOL Time and time again the resourceful men in my life have come up with a tail light, thermostat or one part or another to save the day for me! LOL
@mcbery - This new mower is almost 1/2 price. Along with the Craftsman mower we all ready have we just might be well set for several years. You do know the value of having "parts" available don't you? My men are very mechanical and very resourceful!
do you think they can read us as well as we can them?
heh. congrats on the acquisitions! this is a cute story, too. as must any story be that includes 'I have loved this man for fifty years.'
@Babyboomerjill - I think Fritz is a man of mystery that I have only begun to figure out. LOL He claims to not even try to figure me out!
@distractedbyzombies - Thank you for the sweet comment! I think maybe this marriage of ours just might work out after all LOL.
Looks like money spent wisely to make life a bit easier and I so agree with you about the quality not being what it was in todays mechandise.
Oh that is so funny about your brother-in-law's dog. Lol! That's a big dog to be dragging around to strange places.
Thanks for my smiles this morning.
@Lucy_or_Ethel - lol we are are a little odd aren't we? lol
@Babyboomerjill - Odd indeed!
Love is good !

I watched the picture of the previous post and saw a pick up . Is the yours like that ?
Love
Michel
@fauquet - Thanks for your comment. No the pick up in the previous post is similar to ours but not ours, just one of many pick up trucks we have in this farming area.
Beautiful how you two work together on things like this, a good model for everyone!
Thanks for your encouraging comments about the Friday Funnies, glad you enjoyed them.
Blessings...Mike
I love new appliances! The bad thing is that my HLW can fix anything. Over and over again
He fell for a shiny new lawnmower last Fall tho so maybe when something else breaks down I'll remind him of it. I love your stories...now I'm off to read the older ones I've been missing. Peace
Hey, I'm back and just wanted to say that I so enjoy your photography and perspective. One of my fav stories you've shared was the photo of you and the boys and the little stranger boy who joined you. That was neat. Also, we grew up at New Salem Baptist Church only it was at Kennesaw, Georgia. Interesting, yes? Peace
@shellisland - Thank you for your comments.Interesting that New Salem Baptist Church link! My Fritz usually repairs everything, he had replaced the pump at the tune of $100 just a couple of years ago so it was time to quit putting more money in it.
I forgot to say about the previous post that the dust behind the pick up recalls me the road that passed in front of my parents ' house during war II and even after ! No asphalt but only stones . So when a car was passing from time to time it lifted a cloud od dust . Great dispait of my mother . Dust everuwhere !!
Love
Michel
@fauquet - We have plenty of dust from this gravel road!
Are you enjoying your new washer?
@dingdongdingbat - Yes I am! It really does a great job and the laundry dries much faster since this new washer really spins well.
