  • The reason to proceed with caution

    For years I have seen this building, a church called Elk Chapel. 25 or 30 years ago I attended a fund raiser here to garner funds for restoration of this old building with so much history of our county. Evidently the funds raised were not enough to sustain the well being of this once popular church and meeting place.

    It sits along a major highway, the outhouse stands to the right.

    I was impressed to see this,  although rather spooky to see what first appeared to be fresh flowers on the door knob

    Closer view showed them to be silk, hmm? Curious.

    I grew braver since this is a well traveled road  and the grass was not so overgrown not to reveal any old wells etc.

    I held my camera through an open window and captured these shots.

    The old piano still stands proudly

    But believe me there remains a real and present danger in browsing around vacant buildings

    See them?

    Bees and lot's of them!!! Yikes. I had wondered what that noise was. At 1st I thought maybe my mind was playing tricks on me and I was hearing the long ago choir singing an old hymn I didn't recognize.

    Needless to say I left the area with gladness that I had not entered the old building. It is easier to high tail it to my vehicle rather  than try to hurriedly exit the building and run to the vehicle.

  • What would you have done?

    If you had your camera handy and saw this at a distance what would you have done? Especially on a bright sunny autumn day. I parked the vehicle and took this shot

    zoomed in on this

    and this

    But it wasn't enough to appease my appetite for this long neglected and abandoned church building in this field.

    So I drove where I could park and tramped through the field, very carefully since the grass was high and often old wells remain uncovered or very dangerous in areas like this.

    Out of fear and being alone I decided not to get any closer to peak inside so that will remain a mystery to me just as the history of this church building remains for now. Maybe someday I will find someone who knows about it, meanwhile I have preserved it in the only way I can.

    Would you have stopped like I did?

  • The good, the bad and the ugly...

    This is not a particularly good picture of Lucy but all she had handy to show off her handcrafted necklace Windupherskirt created. It is well made and beautiful...that is the "good". This shot doesn't do the necklace justice,(nor Lucy justice) it is strikingly beautiful. A very 'good' thing. I like it very much Denise

    This sunrise picture is another "good".

    The cloud formation looks to me  like a rowing team in a boat working hard to make it across the sky.

    This truck is so bad that it is good.

    This house is ugly, there are Christmas lights up and a Lazy Boy in the yard....ugly, ugly, ugly. Not that taking the Christmas lights down and removing the Lazy Boy would help the looks of the house in anyway but the neglect is enhanced by them being there. So ugly that it is bad, but the lawn is mowed so that is good.

    Having a beagle is good although even with a face like this Bella can be bad but never ugly.

    One of those combos of good, bad and ugly photos.

    The following is good, very good, I've saved this for years and it always makes me chuckle when I see it.

    I hope you have a nice evening and a good day tomorrow.

  • Quiet, uneventful, peaceful times~~~~~~

    It has been quiet at the jolly little cottage lately. Fritz leaves the house early each morning and is working long hours at the saw mill.The extreme hot weather has eased into reasonably cool and lovely weather with a few bursts of rain to settle the dust. The corn field across the road is drying enough for the leaves to make noise as they rustle with the breeze. It's a melancholy  time as I think of the long autumn days here when the kids would be back in school after a noisy, fun, busy summer and I had the place all to myself. You could hear the silence.

    The sunsets have been sensational here.

    Because we live at the base of a large hill we do not see the actual  sunrise but we get these marvelous  pastels in the south and western skies from the rising sun.

    I learned why the new paint was shedding from this bench.

    Polly uses it as her scratching post and  she couldn't care less that I know.

    ~~~~~~~
    I hope you have a good day today and nice weekend. Do you have any weekend plans? Our plans will be going to my brother and his wife's home Sunday for dinner. We're looking forward to it.
  • I love fall in Iowa
    These are not real pumpkins. I have had 1/2 a dozen of these of various sizes for several years. The 1st of Sept I get them out and decorate with them until after Thanksgiving. Real pumpkins never stayed nice for that long so I have fun with these fakes.
    I also love the different grasses we have.
    With all the turmoil in the world it is good for me to focus on the beauty around me.
    All summer I have attempted to get a picture of a resting butterfly and have met with no success. I was getting some shots of the beautiful hosta blooms
    When this bee showed up and posed for me
     not a butterfly exactly but this will have to do.
    Life is good in my little corner of the big wide world.
  • Truth In Advertising Violation
    Do not believe this ladies!
    I tried a smaller size and I was not 'instantly' slimmed. Matter of fact I was most uncomfortable and looked like a sausage. But one of the 3 claims was indeed true:"stretches and shapes" but stretched fabric makes for a painful lack of circulation and the shaping is actually bulges and a muffin top.
  • Update Edit....I cut my rose
    Added picture: This is the same rose yesterday after a rain. Major changes took place
    The gentle breeze this morning  moved this rose so I could not focus on it so cut it to enjoy in the house, it's spotted with early morning dew.
    What a difference 24  hours made.
    ~~~~~~~

    I hope you have a nice day today. Do you have plans for Labor Day? A picnic to celebrate the last hurrah of summer?

  • To All You Antique Lovers.........

    My daughter-in -law uses this for making her grape juice. It is a great help. This year we have a very good grape crop in our area. This press is getting a good work out.

    Also used for apple cider.

    How old do you suppose this press is?

    It is at least 100 years old and has been in the family all that time.
